Hiking, Biking and Trails

The Lakeland area is dream for hikers and bicyclists, with endless miles of woodland paths and back byways that offer great walking or pedaling among the most spectacular scenery you can imagine.
Many of the trails are part of the 'Northern Highland - American Legion' {mos_ri:American Legion} (NH-AL) State Forest, which encompasses more than 220,000 acres in parts of Oneida, Vilas and Iron Counties. This area's rich land and water resources support many plants and animals, including rare and endangered species like the wood turtle, the bald eagle and the Cooper's hawk.
From the Bearskin’s 18 miles of smooth crushed red granite surface to the Raven’s rugged hills that wind through dense forests, this area has the right trail for you. Remember that bicyclists and hikers are always welcome to ride or walk on all roads and shoulders in the Northwoods, as well.
